Walking with Jesus:
Discovering Christ in the Ordinary Moments of Life
Historical & Cultural Context
The passage in Luke 24:13-43 takes place on the day of Jesus' resurrection. Two disciples, disheartened and confused, are walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, a journey of about seven miles. The crucifixion had shattered their hopes, and they struggled to reconcile their expectations of the Messiah with the events they had witnessed. In Jewish culture, the Messiah was expected to bring political liberation, but Jesus' death seemed to contradict this hope. This context highlights the disciples' emotional and spiritual turmoil as they unknowingly encounter the risen Christ.
In this narrative, two disciples are joined by a stranger on their journey to Emmaus. They share their grief and confusion about Jesus' death and the reports of His resurrection. The stranger, who is Jesus, explains the Scriptures concerning the Messiah, but they do not recognize Him until He breaks bread with them. Later, Jesus appears to the larger group of disciples, offering peace and proving His resurrection by showing His wounds and eating with them. This passage emphasizes the fulfillment of Scripture and the tangible reality of Jesus' resurrection.
Luke 24:31-32: "Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him—and He disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, 'Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?'" These verses capture the moment of revelation. The disciples' spiritual blindness is lifted as they recognize Jesus in the breaking of bread, a moment rich with Eucharistic symbolism. Their hearts burning within them reflect the transformative power of God's Word when illuminated by Christ Himself.
This passage reminds us that Jesus often walks with us in our moments of doubt and despair, even when we fail to recognize Him. Like the disciples, we may be so consumed by our circumstances that we overlook His presence. Yet, Jesus patiently reveals Himself through Scripture, fellowship, and the breaking of bread. His resurrection assures us that He is alive and actively involved in our lives, offering peace and hope.
Seek Jesus in Scripture: Dedicate time to reading and meditating on the Bible, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal Christ to you through His Word.
Practice Hospitality: Like the disciples who invited Jesus to stay with them, open your home and heart to others. You may encounter Christ in unexpected ways.
Celebrate Communion: Participate in the Lord's Supper with a renewed awareness of His presence and the hope of His resurrection.
