Called and Empowered:
The Holy Spirit’s Guidance in Ministry
Historical & Cultural Context
The events in Acts 13:1-12 take place in the early days of the Christian church, during a time when the gospel was spreading beyond Jewish communities into the Gentile world. Antioch, where this passage begins, was a significant city in the Roman Empire and a hub for early Christian activity. The church in Antioch was diverse, with leaders from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds, reflecting the global nature of the gospel. This passage marks the beginning of Paul’s first missionary journey, a pivotal moment in the spread of Christianity.
In Acts 13:1-12, the Holy Spirit speaks to the church in Antioch, instructing them to set apart Barnabas and Saul (Paul) for a special mission. After fasting, praying, and laying hands on them, the church sends them off. They travel to Cyprus, where they proclaim the word of God in synagogues. In Paphos, they encounter a sorcerer named Elymas, who opposes their message. Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, rebukes Elymas, and he is struck blind. This miraculous event leads the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, to believe in the gospel.
Acts 13:2: “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’” This verse highlights the importance of spiritual disciplines like worship and fasting in discerning God’s will. The Holy Spirit actively guides the church, emphasizing that ministry is initiated and empowered by God.
Acts 13:9-10: “Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked directly at Elymas and said, ‘You are a child of the devil and an enemy of all righteousness. You are full of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the straight ways of the Lord?’” Paul’s boldness and spiritual authority come from being filled with the Holy Spirit. This confrontation demonstrates the power of God to overcome opposition and affirm the truth of the gospel.
This passage reminds us that God calls and equips His people for His mission. The church in Antioch models a community that seeks God’s direction through prayer and fasting, showing us the importance of spiritual preparation. Paul and Barnabas’ journey illustrates that ministry often involves challenges, but the Holy Spirit provides the power and wisdom needed to overcome them. The story of Elymas and Sergius Paulus reveals that God’s truth prevails, even in the face of opposition, and that His power can transform lives.
