The Power of Jesus' Name:
Boldness in Faith and Witness
Historical & Cultural Context
The events in Acts 3:12–4:4 occur shortly after Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit empowered the apostles to boldly proclaim the gospel. Peter and John, two of Jesus' closest disciples, were ministering in Jerusalem, where the temple was the center of Jewish worship. The Jewish leaders, including the Sadducees, held significant religious and political power, and they were often resistant to the message of Jesus as the Messiah. This passage highlights the tension between the early church and the Jewish authorities, as well as the miraculous signs that accompanied the apostles' ministry.
In Acts 3:12–4:4, Peter addresses a crowd after healing a lame man at the temple gate called Beautiful. He redirects their amazement, emphasizing that the healing was not by his own power but through faith in Jesus Christ. Peter boldly proclaims Jesus as the glorified servant of God, whom the people had rejected and crucified, but whom God raised from the dead. As Peter and John continue to preach, the religious leaders become disturbed by their message of resurrection and arrest them. Despite the opposition, many who heard the message believed, and the number of believers grew to about five thousand.
Acts 3:16: "By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through Him that has completely healed him, as you can all see." This verse underscores the centrality of faith in Jesus' name. The healing of the lame man was a visible demonstration of the power and authority of Jesus, affirming His identity as the risen Savior.
Acts 4:4: "But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand." Despite opposition, the gospel continued to spread. This verse highlights the unstoppable nature of God's work and the transformative power of the message of Jesus.
This passage challenges us to consider the source of our faith and boldness. Peter and John did not rely on their own strength or eloquence but on the power of Jesus' name. Their courage to proclaim the gospel, even in the face of persecution, serves as a model for believers today. It also reminds us that God can use ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things when they act in faith. The growth of the early church, even under opposition, is a testament to the power of the Holy Spirit working through faithful witnesses.
