"The Cornerstone of Peace" – Amid the rising stones of a sacred structure, Jesus stands as the living cornerstone, joining Jew and Gentile into one new humanity. On one side, elders of Israel in prayerful awe; on the other, Gentiles shedding the symbols of empire and idolatry. The shattered wall at His feet speaks of a barrier forever torn down. Bathed in golden light, this Gérôme-inspired tableau captures the sacred union wrought by grace—the birth of the Church, one body in Christ.
From Death to Life:
Embracing Grace and Unity in Christ
The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Ephesians while imprisoned in Rome, addressing both Jewish and Gentile believers. Ephesus was a major city in the Roman Empire, known for its diverse population and the worship of the goddess Artemis. This cultural backdrop of division and idolatry highlights the transformative power of the gospel, which unites people from all backgrounds into one body through Christ. Paul’s message in Ephesians 2 emphasizes God’s grace, the reconciliation of humanity to God, and the unity of believers as the household of God.
Ephesians 2:1-22 is a profound declaration of God’s redemptive work. Paul begins by describing humanity’s spiritual state before Christ—dead in sin and following the ways of the world. However, through God’s mercy and love, believers are made alive with Christ and saved by grace through faith, not by works. The passage transitions to emphasize the unity of Jews and Gentiles, who were once separated but are now reconciled through Christ’s sacrifice. Jesus is portrayed as the cornerstone of a new spiritual temple, where all believers are joined together as God’s dwelling place.
Ephesians 2:8-9: “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.” These verses encapsulate the heart of the gospel: salvation is a gift from God, not something we can earn. It humbles us and magnifies God’s mercy.
Ephesians 2:14: “For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility.” This verse highlights Christ’s role as the peacemaker, uniting people who were once divided by ethnicity, culture, and religious law.
Ephesians 2 reminds us of the incredible transformation that occurs when we accept God’s grace. It shifts our identity from being spiritually dead to being alive in Christ. This passage also challenges us to embrace unity within the body of Christ, breaking down barriers of division. In a world often marked by hostility and separation, the church is called to be a living testimony of reconciliation and peace. The message of grace also frees us from striving for salvation, allowing us to rest in God’s finished work.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your incredible grace that has brought me from death to life. Help me to live in the freedom of Your gift of salvation and to extend that grace to others. Teach me to be a peacemaker, breaking down walls of division and reflecting Your love. May my life be a dwelling place for Your Spirit, bringing glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
