Learning from Belshazzar's Downfall to Honor God in Our Lives

The events of Daniel 5 take place during the reign of Belshazzar, the last king of Babylon, around 539 BC. Babylon was a powerful empire known for its wealth, grandeur, and idolatry. Belshazzar, co-regent with his father Nabonidus, hosted a lavish feast, demonstrating arrogance and disregard for the sacred. This chapter unfolds on the night Babylon fell to the Medo-Persian Empire, marking the end of its dominance. The desecration of the holy vessels from the Jerusalem temple during the feast highlights the king's irreverence toward the God of Israel.

Daniel 5 recounts the dramatic story of Belshazzar's feast, where he and his nobles drank from the sacred vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem, praising false gods. During the revelry, a mysterious hand appeared, writing on the wall. Terrified, Belshazzar summoned his wise men, but none could interpret the writing. Finally, Daniel was called, and he revealed the message: "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN." These words declared God's judgment on Belshazzar's reign, stating that his days were numbered, he had been weighed and found wanting, and his kingdom would be divided. That very night, Belshazzar was killed, and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom.
