The Harvest is Plentiful
Lessons from Jesus' Sending of the Seventy-Two
In Luke 10:1-24, Jesus sends out seventy-two disciples in pairs to prepare the way for His ministry in the towns He planned to visit. This event occurs during Jesus' journey to Jerusalem, a pivotal time in His ministry. The number seventy-two may symbolize the nations of the world, as listed in Genesis 10, emphasizing the universal scope of the gospel. In the Jewish context, traveling in pairs was customary for safety and credibility, and the disciples were sent with specific instructions to rely on God’s provision and to proclaim the coming of the Kingdom of God.
Jesus appoints seventy-two disciples and sends them ahead in pairs, instructing them to pray for more laborers for the harvest, as the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. He warns them of the challenges they will face, likening their mission to lambs among wolves. They are to travel light, depend on the hospitality of others, and proclaim peace and the nearness of God’s Kingdom. Upon their return, the disciples rejoice over their authority to cast out demons, but Jesus redirects their joy to the eternal reward of their names being written in heaven. Jesus Himself rejoices in the Spirit, praising the Father for revealing these truths to the humble and childlike.
Luke 10:2: "He told them, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.'"
This verse highlights the urgency of the mission and the need for prayerful dependence on God to raise up more laborers for His Kingdom. It reminds us that the work of spreading the gospel is vast and requires divine empowerment.
Luke 10:20: "However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."
Jesus shifts the focus from earthly accomplishments to eternal security, teaching that our ultimate joy should be rooted in our relationship with God and the assurance of salvation.
This passage challenges us to embrace our role as laborers in God’s harvest. It reminds us that the mission field is vast, and the need for workers is great. Jesus’ instructions to the seventy-two emphasize reliance on God, humility, and the proclamation of peace. In a world filled with distractions and self-reliance, this passage calls us back to the simplicity of trusting God and prioritizing His Kingdom. It also reminds us to find our joy not in what we do for God but in who we are in Him—beloved children with an eternal inheritance.
Pray for Laborers: Dedicate time each day to pray for more workers in God’s Kingdom, including missionaries, pastors, and everyday believers who share the gospel in their communities.
Step Out in Faith: Identify one way you can serve as a laborer in God’s harvest this week, whether by sharing your faith, volunteering, or encouraging someone in their spiritual journey.
Rejoice in Eternal Security: Reflect on the assurance of your salvation and let it fuel your joy and gratitude, even amidst challenges.
How can I actively participate in God’s harvest field in my daily life?
What steps can I take to rely more on God’s provision and less on my own resources?
Do I find my joy in my relationship with God, or am I more focused on my accomplishments?
How can I cultivate a heart of prayer for the needs of God’s Kingdom?
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling us to be laborers in Your harvest. Help us to trust in Your provision and to walk in humility as we share the good news of Your Kingdom. Teach us to rejoice not in our achievements but in the eternal security we have in You. Strengthen us to face challenges with faith and to always seek Your guidance. May our lives reflect Your peace and love to those around us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
"Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy. He who goes out weeping, bearing a trail of seed to sow, will surely return with shouts of joy, carrying sheaves of grain." — Psalm 126:5-6
This week, commit to sharing the gospel with at least one person in your life. Whether through a conversation, a kind act, or an invitation to church, take a step of faith to be a laborer in God’s harvest.
