This passage narrates Jacob’s journey from Beersheba to Haran and his divine encounter at Bethel. While resting for the night, Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven, with angels ascending and descending on it. The Lord stands above the ladder and reaffirms His covenant with Jacob, promising him descendants as numerous as the dust of the earth, the inheritance of the land, and blessings for all nations through his offspring. Jacob awakes, deeply moved, and marks the place with the stone he used as a pillow, naming it Bethel ("House of God"). He vows to dedicate his life to God if the Lord fulfills His promises.
Genesis 28:12
"He dreamed and saw a stairway set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven. The angels of God were ascending and descending on it."
This imagery symbolizes the connection between heaven and earth, with God’s presence accessible to humanity despite physical separation. It also foreshadows Jesus Christ as the ultimate "ladder" connecting humanity to God (John 1:51).
Genesis 28:15
"Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you."
