“See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him.”
John opens with a stunning proclamation of God's love, which has given believers their identity as God's children. This adoption transforms how we live and perceive the world, even as the world fails to understand us because it doesn’t know God.
Being a child of God is both a privilege and a call to purity (v. 3). It aligns our hope with the promise of Christ’s return and encourages us to live holy lives in anticipation of His coming.
John draws a clear distinction between sin and righteousness.
“Whoever remains in him doesn’t sin. Whoever sins hasn’t seen him and doesn’t know him.”
He explains that Jesus came to take away sin, and those who belong to Him will not live in habitual sin.
John is not suggesting believers are perfect but rather that true children of God will demonstrate a pattern of righteousness and a rejection of sin because of their transformed nature.
“We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. He who doesn’t love his brother remains in death.”
Love is presented as the hallmark of a true believer. John contrasts Cain, who killed his brother, with the love believers are called to show.
“Let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.”
Love must be active and practical. True faith manifests itself through love in action, reflecting Christ’s sacrificial love for us.
“If our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.”
John provides encouragement for believers who might struggle with doubt. He reminds them that God’s knowledge and grace surpass their self-condemnation. Obedience and love bring confidence in prayer and fellowship with God.
Abiding in God involves keeping His commandments and letting His Spirit guide us. This abiding relationship is marked by faith in Jesus and love for one another.
This chapter is both a comfort and a challenge, reminding us of God’s deep love and calling us to embody His love in our daily lives. Let its truth inspire you to live with faith, love, and confidence.
