“The Garment of Virtue” — An intimate portrayal of the inward transformation described in Colossians 3:12–15, where divine light bathes a humble believer as he casts off the old self and embraces the virtues of Christ—compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and above all, love.
Set Your Heart on Things Above:
Living a Christ-Centered Life
The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians while imprisoned, addressing a church he had not personally visited. The Colossian believers faced challenges from false teachings that blended Jewish legalism, Greek philosophy, and mysticism. Paul’s purpose was to affirm the supremacy of Christ and encourage believers to live in alignment with their new identity in Him. This passage, Colossians 3:1-17, serves as a practical guide for living a Christ-centered life, emphasizing the transformation that comes from setting one’s heart and mind on heavenly things.
In Colossians 3:1-17, Paul begins by urging believers to focus on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. He contrasts the old self, marked by earthly desires and sin, with the new self, which is renewed in the image of Christ. Paul lists behaviors to "put to death," such as immorality, anger, and slander, and encourages believers to clothe themselves with virtues like compassion, kindness, humility, and love. The passage culminates in a call to let the peace of Christ rule in their hearts, to be thankful, and to let the Word of Christ dwell richly among them, guiding their actions and relationships.
Colossians 3:2-3: "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God."
These verses remind believers of their spiritual reality: they have died to their old, sinful nature and now live a new life in Christ. By focusing on heavenly things, they align their thoughts and actions with God’s eternal purposes rather than temporary, worldly concerns.
Colossians 3:12-14: "Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another... And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."
Paul uses the metaphor of clothing to describe the virtues believers should "wear" daily. Love is the unifying force that holds all these virtues together, reflecting the character of Christ in relationships.
This passage challenges us to examine where our focus lies. Are we consumed by earthly concerns, or are we intentionally setting our hearts on Christ and His kingdom? Paul’s call to "put off" the old self and "put on" the new self is a reminder that transformation is not passive—it requires daily surrender and intentionality. The virtues listed—compassion, kindness, humility, and love—are not just ideals but practical ways to reflect Christ in our interactions with others.
Renew Your Mind Daily: Begin each day by meditating on scripture and praying for God to align your thoughts with His will.
Practice Forgiveness: Actively choose to forgive those who wrong you, remembering how Christ has forgiven you.
Clothe Yourself with Love: Make a conscious effort to show kindness, patience, and humility in your relationships, even when it’s difficult.
