"Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead..." — The Apostle Paul presses on toward the upward call of God in Christ Jesus, his eyes fixed on the eternal city, leaving behind the chains of the flesh and the fading glories of the law. A Rembrandt inspired chiaroscuro masterfully unveils the drama of Philippians 3, where light breaks through conviction, and grace beckons the faithful toward resurrection glory.
Pressing On Toward the Goal:
Finding Joy in Christ
The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Philippians while imprisoned, likely in Rome, around AD 60-62. Philippi was a Roman colony in Macedonia, populated by a mix of Roman citizens and Greeks. The church in Philippi was one of Paul’s most beloved congregations, known for their generosity and partnership in the gospel. In this chapter, Paul addresses the dangers of false teachers, the futility of placing confidence in the flesh, and the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.
Philippians 3:1-21 is a call to rejoice in the Lord and to reject reliance on human achievements for salvation. Paul warns against those who promote legalism, emphasizing that righteousness comes through faith in Christ, not through works. He shares his personal testimony, counting all his former gains as loss compared to the value of knowing Christ. Paul encourages believers to press on toward the heavenly prize, living as citizens of heaven and awaiting the return of Jesus Christ.
Philippians 3:8-9: “What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness derived from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness from God on the basis of faith.”
Paul’s words reflect a radical reorientation of values. He willingly surrenders all earthly accolades and achievements, recognizing that true righteousness and eternal life are found only in Christ. This verse challenges us to evaluate what we treasure most and to prioritize our relationship with Jesus above all else.
Paul’s message in Philippians 3 is a timeless reminder that our identity and worth are not rooted in worldly accomplishments but in our relationship with Christ. In a culture that often measures success by status, wealth, or achievements, Paul’s testimony invites us to shift our focus to eternal values. His example of pressing on toward the goal of knowing Christ encourages us to persevere in faith, even amidst trials and distractions.

How can you live more intentionally as a citizen of heaven in your daily interactions?
Heavenly Father, thank You for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus as Lord. Help me to count all things as loss compared to the joy of being found in Him. Teach me to press on toward the goal of eternal life, keeping my eyes fixed on Jesus. Strengthen me to live as a citizen of heaven, reflecting Your love and grace in all I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
