Trusting God's Timing
The Gospel of John was written to reveal Jesus as the Son of God and to inspire belief in Him. In John 11, Jesus performs one of His most profound miracles—raising Lazarus from the dead. This event occurs in Bethany, a small village near Jerusalem, during a time when tensions between Jesus and the religious leaders were escalating. The Jewish leaders were increasingly threatened by Jesus' growing influence, and this miracle became a pivotal moment leading to their decision to plot His death.
In John 11:37-57, the narrative unfolds after Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. While some witnesses marvel at the miracle, others report it to the Pharisees, igniting fear among the religious leaders. They convene a council, worried that Jesus' growing popularity might provoke Roman intervention and jeopardize their authority. Caiaphas, the high priest, prophesies that it is better for one man to die for the people than for the whole nation to perish. This statement, though politically motivated, foreshadows Jesus' sacrificial death for humanity. The chapter concludes with Jesus withdrawing to a remote area as the leaders intensify their plans to arrest Him.
John 11:50: "You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish." Caiaphas' words, though spoken with political intent, carry profound theological significance. Unbeknownst to him, he articulates God's redemptive plan—Jesus' death would bring salvation not only to Israel but to all who believe in Him.
John 11:53: "So from that day on they plotted to kill Him." This verse marks a turning point in the Gospel narrative. The religious leaders' rejection of Jesus culminates in their decision to eliminate Him, setting the stage for His crucifixion and ultimate victory over sin and death.
This passage highlights the tension between human plans and God's sovereign will. While the religious leaders sought to preserve their power, God used their actions to fulfill His redemptive purpose. It reminds us that even in the face of opposition, God's plans cannot be thwarted. Jesus' willingness to face death for the sake of humanity demonstrates His unparalleled love and obedience to the Father.
In our lives, we may encounter situations where God's timing or methods seem perplexing. Like the witnesses at Lazarus' tomb, we might question why God allows certain events to unfold. Yet, this passage assures us that God's plans are always for our ultimate good and His glory.

Heavenly Father,
